Crystalens for Cataracts
The clouding of the eye's natural lens, called a cataract, is an unfortunate fact of life that occurs with age. Cataract patients have had the option of improving vision with cataract surgery for some time, but there used to be many limitations. Traditionally, cataract patients would have their natural lens replaced with a single vision implant, allowing patients improved far vision, but requiring them to use glasses for other distances. Now cataract patients can choose an accomodative lens implant called Crystalens to improve vision.
Crystalens is a new intraocular lens that offers cataract patients the freedom of clear vision and seamless focusing. The Crystalens implant replaces the eye's natural lens and offers patients a full range of vision. Approved by the FDA in 2003, Crystalens allows patients to achieve accommodation, or focusing ability between close, middle and far distances. Now cataract patients can enjoy clearer, sharper vision without relying on contacts or glasses. Our surgeons are specially trained in the placement and protocol of Crystalens implantable contact lenses. If you suffer from cataracts, find out if you are a good candidate for Crystalens.
Other Intraocular Lenses
In addition to Crystalens, there are several types of intraocular lens implants that may also be used to correct distance and near vision. Currently available lenses include the ReSTOR and the ReZOOM.
ReZoom
ReZoom Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are used to correct vision for people who are suffering from cataracts. In treating cataracts with ReZoom, the eye’s natural, crystalline lens is removed and replaced with an IOL. In the past, IOLs were monofocal, meaning they were pre-focused so that you could see either up close or far away, and you would need glasses to see other distances, but with ReZoom IOLs, you can see clearly at a variety of distances.
ReZoom IOLs use multifocal zones to provide you with clear vision at many different distances. Depending on the amount of light present, and the distance of the object from you, the ReZoom IOL zones allow you to see different distances clearly. For the most part, patients who correct their cataracts with ReZoom IOLs no longer need to use glasses or contacts to perform day-to-day tasks.
