iLASIK

In Chicago, Illinois

iLASIK is a new term for a vision correction procedure which combines both IntraLase and CustomVue LASIK. In May, 2005, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) finalized their buyout of VISX, and that combined the technologies of two leading companies in the field of vision correction.

AMO’s most familiar products are Array®, ReZoom™, and Tecnis® (intraocular lenses often used in treating cataracts and presbyopia).

VISX is the manufacturer of a very highly-regarded LASIK system known as the STAR™ S4 Laser system, which gives Wavefront-guided vision correction treatments called CustomVue®.

How iLASIK works
It uses the best of both IntraLase and CustomVue to give you a very precise, safe, and customized vision correction.

  • IntraLase is a method of doing LASIK vision correction where the corneal flap is created by a second laser instead of a blade. At Northwestern Vision Correction Associates, we have been offering this for many years to Chicago residents. If you have thinner-than-average corneas, or fairly severe nearsightedness, IntraLase is a good choice. By using a laser, it can create an extra-thin corneal flap, and this makes refractive surgery available to many people who would not be good candidates for LASIK.

  • CustomVue is the trade name for VISX’s wavefront-guided LASIK system. Wavefront technology is a way of diagnosing your exact eye shape and is far more exact than the traditional phoropter.  If you have ever had your eyes checked, you’ll remember that equipment you look through while the eye doctor flips from one lens to another, asking, “Which is clearer: one or two?”

  • A wavefront system sends special light into your eye while you look at a focal point, and that light reflects back into the system. It carries with it information on the exact shape of your eye. The light is changed by the microscopic contours of your eye and returns to the system in a distinctive pattern. The attached computer converts this light information to 3-D maps of each eye. Every human eye is unique – even your own two eyes are different.

Highly accurate diagnosis and treatment
Vision correction procedures based on a wavefront diagnosis are far more precise than those that are based on the traditional method of refractive diagnosis, using the phoropter.  The VISX CustomVue system includes the wavefront diagnostic system, a comfortable patient bed, the excimer laser used for treatment, a microscope, computer, an eye movement tracking system, and various other implements needed by the eye surgeon.

That complete system enables the treatment laser to be guided by the wavefront diagnostic information and your new vision will be even clearer than it would have otherwise been.
